This is a dish I have grown up eating. Aayi makes this with rice rotti(alayle pita rotti) for breakfast. The cooked masoor and the garam masala gives a very different aroma to this dish. This tastes good when it is made very spicy and goes very well with the bland taste of rotti .
Ingredients: 3/4 cup masoor (whole) 1/2 cup onions(chopped) 1/2 cup potato(chopped) 3/4 cup coconut(fresh or frozen) 3-4 cloves 2″ piece cinnamon 1/2 tea spn coriander seeds 3-4 red chilies 1/2 tea spn tamarind extract (or use 2 small pieces of normal tamarind) 3-4 pepper Oil Salt
Increase the spices if required.
Method: Soak masoor in water for around 1hr (this helps to cook masoor faster). Cook masoor with onion and potato (Just 1-2 whistles if using cooker). Heat a little oil and add cloves, cinnamon, pepper and coriander seeds. Grind them with coconut, red chilies and tamarind. Add this masala to masoor and cook for around 5-10mins. Serve with rice rotti(alayle pita rotti) .

Otane is dry green/yellow peas. Randayi is a sidedish with coconut and is watery in consistency. Otane randayi is one of my all time favorite dish. Mainly because it has breadfruit in it. We make a lot of different such randayis with the same base(coconut, chilies), but depending on the vegetable or beans used in it, all of them taste very different.
Few days back, I found a fresh breadfruit in Indian store. But I have heard they are readily available in frozen section of most of the Indian stores.
Ingredients: 1 cup dry peas ( otane ) 1 cup breadfruit cut into pieces 1 cup coconut (fresh or frozen) 4-5 sichuan pepper or teppal 2-3 kokum pieces 4-5 red chilies Salt
Method: Soak dry peas in water overnight. Cook peas in pressure cooker. Cook breadfruit with 2 cups of water (since it cooks very fast, do not cook in pressure cooker). Grind coconut with red chilies to a very smooth paste. Add the paste to cooked peas and breadfruit. Add kokum, salt, slightly crushed teppal (crush teppal in 1 tbl spn of water and add. Do not crush it completly). Cook for around 8-10minutes. Serve as a sidedish with rice.
