Since my love for cooking is increasing day by day, Aayi tries to give all of her own recipes as well as the ones she collected from different sources to me. I write down all of them when I talk to her and I try whenever I get time. So these days the pile of recipes are increasing and I feel I am running out of time. This is a recipe which she saw in one of the TV shows....

Somewhere in the month of July – August, we get Mushrooms(Almbe in Konkani, anabe in Kannada) here. They grow naturally especially in forests. They grow abundantly near the snake nests. They are the sites of mites. But people are afraid of Cobras and many do not go near them. Many bold people go to the forest to get them at the appropriate time. We get different varieties of mushrooms. In South Kanara we get button mushrooms....

I have a bad habit of trying different things when I go to a restaurant. Bad because, most of the time I make wrong choices from the menu (which I later don’t end up liking). I did the same thing at the very popular ‘ Panera bread ‘. Wrong choices a couple of times and we decided never to go again. But last week, I went there with my colleagues....

Pathrado is one of my all time favourite dishes. I remember writing ‘ pathrado ‘ in the ‘favourite food’ column of autograph books which were circulated during our college days (autograph books are little books having columns as name, address, phone number, favourite actor, favourite actress, favourite food etc etc. During my college days, everyone had a autograph book, those were circulated to all the friends during the final year....

If I claim I have a Konkani food blog, anybody will ask the question “have you blogged about our great Batate Song ??”. If my answer is “no”, then I definitely can’t claim of having a Konkani food blog. All I meant to say is, batate song (do not confuse this song with English ‘Song’) is a very very famous dish and every Konkani person is a great fan of it....

Tambli/Tamboli/Tambli is one of the easiest dishes that can be prepared in no time. There are many different recipes for tamblis . I found a very good article about tamblis in my collection from Kannada weekly magazine. This is one of them. This tambli can be made with spinach, watercress( ekpanni ) etc. I had pumpkin plant with me that day, so I used it instead of spinach/watercress. These tamblis are supposed to be very good for health....

We didn’t realize when Navaratri went by. We didn’t celebrate it at all. Like always, though I had grand plans, I didn’t do anything for the festival. I ate rava idli for the first time in Bangalore. This was neither prepared at my home nor I had tasted it anywhere at my native or in Belgaum. So first time when I ate it, I became a fan of it. This year I had decided to make all the important dishes that can be associated with Diwali. Makar Sankranti is just around the corner. That reminds me to post this very very special recipe here. I have been thinking about it for a long time. For us, Sankranti was always associated with this very tasty sugar drops – tilgul or kante halvo (Kante – spikes, halvo – halwa, a sweet dish). On Sankranti, we give a handful of this tilgul and sesame laddoo to everyone we meet and tell them “ tilgul ghya goaD goaD bola “(take tilgul and talk sweet), which finally evolved into “Take sweet, talk sweet and be sweet” in schools....

Banana vada It was vade panchami few days ago – it is celebrated at my kuldevasthan – family god’s temple at Ankola. Thousands of deities gather for the pooja. One of the biggest things (other than super delicious lunch) during this function is these banana vada prasad – so the function is called vade panchami. Many men gather to make these vadas and then the vadas are deep fried in huge pan....

This recipe is inspired by beetroot sasam and beetroot raita . This is very mild in flavor, it has that sweetish tinge from beetroot. It can be made with little thick yogurt to be served as a sidedish/chutney or can be made with thinned down yogurt/buttermilk to be served with hot rice as tambli. Ingredients: 1 cup cooked and chopped beetroot 4 green chillies 2 tea spns mustard seeds 4-5 curry leaves 1/2 tea spn urad dal 1 red chilli A pinch asafoetida 1 cup yogurt Oil Salt...
